Thailand is one of the countries that is popular for it's food with all their street foods. Every direction you turn you are sure to spot a food stall. But we're not here to talk about street food but their desserts, which are truly sublime! Mango sticky rice, thab tim krob (red ruby) and luuk chuup (a mung bean dessert shaped into miniature fruits).
Mango sticky rice is always accompanied with a coconut cream sauce with a touch of salt, which gives this dessert it's richness. The slightly sour mango cuts the sweetness from the sticky rice and the coconut cream. Basically, this dessert has a great balance of the sweet, salty and sour.
Don't forget the rule that you MUST finish off your meal with a sweet ending! Another excuse not to skip dessert ;)

Soo Kee Restaurant at Sea Park
We've been regulars at Soo Kee for a long time now. We love how it's a family run restaurant and that the food there is just delicious. They sell chicken hor fun which is one of our favourite things to eat.
Chicken hor fun is originally from Ipoh and well, you don't need to travel so far for a good bowl anymore! The hor fun is silky smooth and the soup is full of flavour with some chopped chives and deep fried onions. The steamed chicken is is amazingly tender. There are a few essential side orders when eating hor fun, which is tauge (bean sprouts) and their prawn wantans! Their prawn wantans are made with whole prawns and there's a slight crunch when you bite into them.
We usually order the hor fun and chicken separately.
Prawn Wantans with vegetables.
Even if the food here is a little pricy, you still have to give it a try cause when the older generation love it, it's gotta be good! :)

Banoffee Pie
My first introduction to banoffee pie was at Delicious and I was so impressed by the flavours that melded together so nicely. My friend and I actually attempted to make it for a dessert cooking competition in school as the theme was fruits. (We didn't win though!Guess it was a little too simple huh?) It doesn't even require baking in the oven but it sure is a dessert I know many would just love!
As I was saying, it's really simple to make! Bash some digestive cookies and add some melted butter to it. We used salted butter to help balance out the sweetness from the toffee. However, remember that you do need a loose bottom cake tin, or detachable tart tin!
The toffee is very simple with just 3 simple ingredients: Condensed milk, brown sugar and some butter.
We decided to add a little twist to this recipe. We added some peanut butter to give it a little kick and richness.

The toffee is very simple with just 3 simple ingredients: Condensed milk, brown sugar and some butter.
We decided to add a little twist to this recipe. We added some peanut butter to give it a little kick and richness.
- 3/4 a bag of digestive biscuits (base)
- 150g of melted butter (base)
- 2 tbsp of butter (toffee)
- 250g of condensed milk (toffee)
- 3 tbsp of brown sugar (toffee)
- 8 small bananas (or as much as you need to cover the base)
- 250ml of whipped cream
- 3 tbsp of peanut butter (Optional)
- Crush the digestive biscuits till there are no large lumps of biscuits left. Pour the melted butter into the biscuit crumbs and mix well.
- Press the crumb mixture into your tart tin. Make sure you pat it down tightly so that it wont break off when you cut into it. You could use the back of a spoon to smoothen out the crumbs. Refrigerate the base while making the toffee.
- Pour the condensed milk into a saucepan and add the butter and brown sugar. Put it on the heat until the sugar melts and the mixture is smooth. The longer you leave it on the heat, the browner it gets.
- If you're adding the peanut butter, put the peanut butter into the microwave until melted. But do be careful as the peanut butter can burn. Spread the peanut butter onto the chilled base. Spread it fast as the heat from the peanut butter will start melting the butter in the base. Chill in the fridge.
- Slice the bananas and arrange them onto the base.
- Pour the toffee over the bananas.
- Whisk the whipped cream till stiff and spread. (We cheated cause we had whipped cream from the tin. But I do not recommend the tinned ones)
It's so much easier than it looks like! Give this recipe a try. You won't regret it! :)

Chee Cheong Fun
Sorry for the lack of posting! Tons of work on both our sides. But we're back!
Bearing pictures of chee cheong fun! The silky rice noodle rolls with the sweet brown sauce and not forgetting the fish balls and fu chok(bean curd) with fish paste in between. Topped off with toasted sesame seeds. Mmmm. With some chilli too for that spicy touch.
Our mom buys the chee cheong fun from SS14, Subang. The guy used to have a tiny stall in one of the mamaks but now he's got a food truck! Still situated in SS14 :) Go get your chee cheong fun! He's only there in the morning and it's along SS14/1!

Green Beans with Dried Shrimp and Garlic
Green beans, is probably the most common dish to order when you're out at any restaurant since it's so easily available. Be it with salted egg, or stir fried with garlic and dried shrimp. Definitely a dish to prepare too!
Add lots of garlic as it gives a fragrant smell and of course flavour. Besides that, garlic is good for you!
Just fry the garlic, some shredded carrot and the dried shrimp till fragrant, and then just add in the green beans. Cook them till they change to a vibrant green colour. You could blanch the beans and stir fry them to speed up the cooking process too! Don't forget to season them! But cut down on the salt cause the dry shrimp could be a little salty. So taste as you go :)Sunday, September 11, 2011
La Bodega, Empire Shopping Gallery
We've always wanted to try La Bodega and during Yenn's birthday, we decided to head there for dinner. La Bodega is famous for their Spanish tapas with a warm atmosphere in their restaurants. Headed to the La Bodega branch at Empire Shopping Gallery which was a cosy place, definitely a good place for meeting up with friends. We were served by waiters always on standby for orders except however, their attention to refill water was definitely lacking.
The Caesar Salad
Somehow the standards of caesar salads around have dropped but La Bodega's I'd say is good. The leaves were coated with a perfect amount of dressing with croutons that gave it a little character with its herby flavour.
Linguine Alfredo.
This is one of the best alfredo's I've ever come across I'd say. The creamy alfredo sauce with mushrooms and bacon was absolutely delicious and I'd definitely go back for more!
Paella Valencia Mixta.
Paella de Pescado y Mariscos
Paella, usually recognized by many as Spain's national dish and I, really do like paellas. Both Paella's above are actually pretty much the same, both comprising of sea food which gives you the taste of the sea. The difference is that maybe one of them has the extra of saffron if I'm not mistaken which gives it a much richer taste with more obvious flavours.

Saffron Angel Hair with Pumpkin and Lamb Meatballs
The creamy saffron sauce with pumpkin and lamb meatballs must be my favourite. The meatballs were great and juicy and the sauce was a unique creamy sauce with a touch of sweetness from the pumpkin. It was hearty and delicious with some olives to give it a punch. Definitely a must try!

Salad with Beef, Honey and Balsamic Vinegar
Since we had some leftover steak from the other day, we decided to be healthy! We became scientists and experimented with the salad dressing. We didn't really go out of the box cause honey and balsamic actually is a good combination. But it was our first time! And it wasn't bad for a first try I might add (;
Added a few usuals to the salad. A hard boiled egg and some tomato wedges. And don't forget, the ratio for salad dressing is 3 parts oil and 1 part vinegar!

BiBi Chik Restaurant @SS2
BiBiChik is a little warm restaurant located in SS2 which serves delicious, mouth watering, halal Nyonya cuisine. It is definitely our favourite Nyonya restaurant serving simple but delicious food that can't compare to other Nyonya restaurants we've come across. Our favourites like the crispy brinjal and honey sotong (squid) keeps us coming back for more!
Crispy Brinjal is one of BiBi Chik's specialty is definitely the dish we crave at night and would eat it all day if we could! I still can't wrap my head around how they cook them so perfectly! They're crisp and sweet honey-coated wonders on the outside and smooth, silky and mushy on the inside! They're airy but oh I just love them! If they ever sell these babies at the movies, I'd probably buy them instead of popcorn to go with my movie!
Petai Sambal Prawns. A spicy, appetizing dish.
Paku pakis (fern) with sambal belacan and lime. This Paku Pakis dish is definitely my favourite! I always love the unique texture of the Paku Pakis and in this dish with sambal and lime, you get a a sweet, sour, spicy but fresh dish of paku pakis. I could eat a whole plate all by myself, I kid you not.
This was our first ordering the okra with sambal belacan. It's pretty much the same as the paku pakis just minus the sourness from the lime. Should just order the paku pakis instead unless you don't like the paku pakis texture since some people can't take the little sappiness.
Pongteh Chicken. I find my parents always comparing pongteh chicken dishes between Nyonya restaurants first but I honestly don't know what the hype is all about. Yenn seems to like it a lot though. I personally, somehow think it's just a normal chicken dish with potatoes with sweet soy sauce and well, a lot of oil even though there's sugarcane pieces in them. I'd much prefer the Seeyoh chicken cause the chicken seems to be smoother compared to the pongteh chicken which is a little dry to me.
Other Tummy Thrills favourite(not shown above): Seeyoh Chicken, Perut Ikan.
